Cata Roads

The upgrading of internal roads was selected as a so-called short-term project during the planning process. This meant that it was due to have been implemented before the finalisation of the plan. This did not materialise. Therefore, from August 2003 onwards, the Development Committee (with the backing of BRC) lobbied ADM to commence with the upgrading without any further delay. There have been a number of obstacles, but in 2006, ADM appointed Envirotech to complete the upgrading of the roads inside the sub-villages of Nyanga, Skafu and Ndela. The purpose of the project is to enable locally-owned as well as emergency vehicles (eg ambulances) to move around the areas more easily than is presently the case. So far, Envirotech has employed ten local people on the project.

The main roads into Nyanga and Skafu fall under the jurisdiction of the provincial government. As such, they were excluded from the ambit of the internal roads project. However, after the Provincial government gave ADM permission to work on the roads, and because the chalets are going to be built in Nyanga, ADM agreed to contribute financial resources to upgrade the two roads.  The work should commence by June 2007.
