A team of 22 local workers is currently working to establish an approved pine plantation, to the east of the existing commercial plantation. This plantation will be owned by the community of Cata, through the CPA. In other words, money that is earned in twenty years’ time from the sale of the wood will come to the community, for further local development. The immediate project aim is to establish 40ha before the end of 2007.
A total of R65,900.00 was paid to the workers during the period August to December 2006 - an important resource inflow into the village. During this period the Pine Team cleared a 20m firebreak on the boundary with the existing Cata plantation, as well as tracer lines. Approximately five hectares was ‘slash and burned’.
Turning an alien invader into a resource - the people of Cata are converting a 55 hectare wattle jungle into a managed plantation.
